WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?

Abuse is considered any attempt by an individual to control, manipulate or demean another individual through the use of physical, emotional, financial or sexual tactics. It is an act of power and control used to frighten or hurt the other person.

Intimate partner domestic violence is defined as any abusive act committed by a person against another person with whom he/she has or has had an intimate sexual relationship—spouse, ex-spouse, live-in partner or, dating partner. Cohabitation is not necessary. However, domestic violence may also occur between non-intimate family members including parent and child, siblings, and other familial relationships. Abuse happens when one person believes that he/she is entitled to control another person.
