Haven House operates a five bedroom emergency shelter for women and their dependent children who are fleeing abusive situations. The shelter is a secure and confidential location. Haven House can provide shelter for up to twenty individuals. Each bedroom has a private bathroom. The common area includes a living room, dining room, and kitchen where communal meals are prepared. There is also a playroom, laundry room, and small enclosed playground for toddlers. There is a large outdoor playground for older children. Haven House is handicapped accessible. All services to victims are free.
The length of stay at Haven House varies from resident to resident and depends on each person’s situation. Residents come to stay at Haven House through a variety of channels. Some are referred by law enforcement after an abusive incident. Others come through referrals from hospitals, health-care agencies, counselors, CYFD, or are self-referred. A brief telephone interview is conducting to determine appropriateness of our services. If a victim does not have access to transportation to Haven House, arrangements will be made to provide her transportation.
Each resident is provided individual case management. Case management provides assistance in helping the resident to establish a violence free lifestyle. This may include obtaining services for legal advocacy, financial assistance, employment referrals and job skills training, referrals to transitional housing programs, individual counseling for themselves and their children, and other services as determined.
A domestic violence support group is provided for residents. This group helps victims understand the issues and dynamics of domestic violence in a safe and confidential environment. Parenting and life skills groups are also provided for residents.
